‘Pack light, fly easy’: Japan Airlines launches clothing rental service for travelers

Travelers arriving in Japan can now travel with less baggage through a new trial program. Japan Airlines (JAL) offers passengers the option to rent clothing upon arrival, eliminating the need to check a bag.

The “Any Wear, Anywhere” program allows passengers to borrow outfits based on size, season, and color preferences.

This initiative started on July 5 and will be available for at least 13 months.

Passengers can reserve clothing up to a month in advance and borrow it for two weeks as part of the initiative. According to the airline, the clothing available for hire consists of a mix of brand-name surplus stock and second-hand pieces.

The process consists of delivering the rented clothing to the visitor’s accommodation before their arrival and picking it up at the end of their stay. The program is a collaboration with the Japanese trading company Sumitomo and aims to collect data on whether it helps reduce the total weight of luggage being carried.

“With more and more people flying again after the COVID-19 pandemic and with the recent emphasis on sustainability, there is a growing movement around the world to promote sustainable tourism.” JAL said.

“Travellers increasingly want to make more sustainable choices regarding their travel destinations, accommodations, transportation, etc., but still lack good options. For example, most travelers now enjoy eating at restaurants and staying at hotels at their destination, but they usually bring their clothes from home.

The Any Wear, Anywhere website highlights that reducing 10kg of weight in a passenger’s luggage can lead to a 7.5kg decrease in carbon dioxide emissions.

Linen rental prices vary depending on the number of items reserved and the style chosen. Currently, a men’s casual summer selection consisting of two pairs of shorts and three T-shirts costs £22.

For women interested in a smart casual outfit of three or four tops and two pairs of pants for spring or autumn, the cost would be around £27.50.
