Peter Elzinga passed away
In light of the passing of Peter Elzinga, Strathcona County Council today celebrated his accomplishments. Peter Elzinga’s political career and philanthropic contributions to Strathcona County and Sherwood Park are noteworthy. At the beginning of his political career, Elzinga served as MP for Pembina for twelve years. He was active in the Progressive Conservative Association and was its president from 1983 to 1986. He served as representative for Sherwood Park in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1986 to 1993 under his public service. Elzinga served as the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Trade and Economic Development, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs during this time.
He was Prime Minister Ralph Klein’s chief of staff until 2004. Peter Elzinga received many praises for his creations. For his exceptional achievements, he received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003 and the Alberta Centenary Medal in 2005. The Heritage Mile Society, which honored him for both his outstanding community achievements since the founding of Sherwood Park and for his most extensive achievements and illustrious political career, he acknowledged his influence. In 2002 he was given a cast bronze sculpture in Sherwood Park as a thank you.
He was named one of the province’s fifty most important people by Alberta Venture magazine in 2003.
