Philips Hue, a brand known for its smart home lighting technology, is highlighting its latest security technology suite. Despite venturing into the realm of smart home cameras and sensors, the company emphasizes its unwavering commitment to lighting innovation.
Now introducing their new range of Matter technology enabled bulbs and strips, these products not only enhance your space but also serve as a deterrent to potential intruders or even roaming feline neighbors.
The recently introduced Secure line features a variety of interconnected door and window sensors and cameras. These smart sensors offer the functionalities expected of a modern home security system, but with a unique twist. Signify, the parent company behind Philips Hue, proudly states that its offering comes with end-to-end encryption by default. This means that all your video clips, snapshots, and live streams remain strictly private. Each camera is equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities to discern whether the entity captured by the camera is a person, a pet, or a package being delivered. The noteworthy aspect is that all of this processing happens directly within the camera itself, eliminating the need to rely on the cloud.
During a question and answer session, Philips Hue executives further clarified that their system goes further by avoiding the transmission of user keys through the cloud. This additional layer of security underscores its dedication to preserving the privacy and integrity of its users’ data.
The highlight of the deals comes from the Secure line of cameras, which features a trio of options at different price points. There’s a corded version priced at $200, a battery-powered version at $250, and a top-of-the-line model at $350, complete with a built-in reflector. Signify highlights that these new cameras offer crystal-clear 1080p HD video streams, ensuring clarity even at night with their night vision capabilities. Beyond video, they are equipped with light and sound alarms, offering a comprehensive security solution. Additionally, users can engage in two-way conversations through the cameras.
Each camera package includes a desktop mount, outdoor charging cable, and anti-drop cable. For those looking to install a camera in the ground, an optional camera mount with an attached stake is available separately for $40, making installation simple.
In addition to introducing its new range of security devices, Signify has announced a collection of innovative smart lighting products. Among these launches are the Perifo track lighting setup and the indoor color spotlight known as Hue Centris. The line also features a new 12V smart bulb and an updated generation of Philips Hue Festavia string lights. As an added bonus, current and past string light models will now feature novel light effects labeled “Prism,” “Glisten,” and “Opal.”
To accommodate these cutting-edge security offerings, Signify is integrating a dedicated “Security Hub” within the existing Philips Hue app. This intuitive app allows users to access live camera feeds, activate lights or alarms, and receive timely notifications about events. Whether the camera captures something important or one of the new magnetic contact sensors is activated on a door or window, users will be informed.
For those interested in upgraded storage options, Signify offers two subscription plans. The Secure Basic plan provides 30 days of video storage for $4 per camera per month, while the Secure Plus plan offers 60 days of storage for $10 per camera per month.
The camera system’s capabilities extend to user-defined privacy controls. By creating “block zones”, users can prevent other camera users from seeing specific areas in the camera feed. On the other hand, designated “activity zones” prevent the camera from sending notifications about motion detected within those zones.
Emphasizing its commitment to security, encryption is a key focus for Signify. The company highlights recent incidents involving other security camera brands, such as Anker-owned Eufy, which has admitted to transmitting unencrypted security footage streams through its web portal. Amazon’s Ring also faced controversy for unauthorized sharing of user images with authorities and possible privacy violations.
Signify’s comprehensive security offerings underline its dedication to safeguarding user privacy and data, with the goal of setting a new standard in the smart home security landscape.
As part of its latest lighting technology launch, Philips Hue introduces an interesting improvement that ensures compatibility with the long-awaited smart home services standard, Matter. This seamless integration is made possible by an upcoming software update for the Philips Hue Bridge, due to be released in September. In particular, the camera system will not immediately benefit from Matter support due to the current absence of support for camera devices within the Matter standard. Although the cameras are on the roadmap for future Matter developments, there is currently no information available on their expected arrival date.
