The Pittsburgh Public School Board voted to hire a consulting group to educate teachers on how to replace “white supremacist culture practices” in teaching math with methods that focus on the “well-being of students.” students of color.”

Ebony Pugh, director of Public Relations and Media Content for Pittsburgh Public Schools, confirmed to Fox News Digital that the Pittsburgh School District Board of Trustees authorized her offices to enter into a contract with Quetzal.
The move will provide the school with “additional foundational knowledge on anti-racist mathematics pedagogy and tangible learning experiences that can be implemented with students.”
Quetzal will provide support through introductory workshops for math teachers and a leadership series for administrators.
The school board agenda for the meeting confirms the purpose of the introductory workshops, which will confront “oppressive practices in mathematics teaching with practices that center the well-being of students of color and provide opportunities for mathematics departments and teachers to increase his anti-racist mathematical praxis. collaboratively in pedagogy and instruction.”

It was also confirmed that participants in the leadership workshop series “will participate in an ongoing series of workshops on the topic of anti-racist mathematical leadership.”
“The purpose of this series is to equip educators who have completed Edition 1 of the Antiracist Mathematics Workshop Series to develop and lead toward more cohesive and aligned mathematics instruction praxis in classrooms, departments, and schools. “Participants will learn how to train others on the topic of anti-racist mathematics, as well as how to identify equity issues in mathematics spaces,” the school board added.
Several schools, organizations, and states have issued guidance and promoted programs for teachers that seek to eliminate racism from mathematics.
In 2021, the state of Oregon defended teacher training “Pathways to Equitable Math Instruction,” which warns that focusing on finding the correct answer in class is an example of how white supremacy infiltrates schools.
“The concept that mathematics is purely objective is unequivocally false, and its teaching is even less so,” reads a document in the Equitable Math toolkit. “Advocating the idea that there are always right and wrong answers perpetuates objectivity and the fear of open conflict.”
Similarly, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics hosted a webinar in 2022 that discussed anti-racist mathematics and called for removing all examples of “tracking,” which they claimed was a form of “spirit murder” inflicted on children. color through mathematics.
