Pope Francis warns of the risk of handing over human life to ‘the logic of algorithms’

Pope Francis warned of the risk of handing over human life to the logic of the algorithms that decide its value, in a message sent to the director general of UNESCO, Signora Audrey Azoulay, on the occasion of World Literacy Day that is celebrated today.

In his message, Pope Francis laments that “estimates on the number of people who lack basic literacy skills continue to be alarming and this represents an obstacle to the full development of their potential” and the world “needs the capabilities and contributions of “All to better face the challenges of our time.”

And among the challenges, Francisco mentions three: “A first challenge is that of literacy for peace” because “learning the lexicon of peace means recovering the value of dialogue, the practice of kindness.”

Another of the challenges, the father adds, is “digital literacy” because “a wide ‘digital divide’ persists, in which millions of people remain on the sidelines because they are deprived of access not only to essential goods, but also also to information and communication technologies”.

And also, he asserted, that “on the ‘digital highways’ many are harmed by division and hatred.”

Promotion of policies and laws

And he added that there is also “the serious risk of handing over human life to the logic of the devices that decide its value, so it will be necessary that the policies and laws aimed at promoting the acquisition of digital skills do not neglect the broader ethical reflection on the use of algorithms, guiding the use of new technologies towards a responsible and humane path”.

While the third challenge, he indicated, is that of “integral ecological literacy” since “the degradation of nature is closely linked to the culture of waste that characterizes current human coexistence, it will be a matter of patiently and tenaciously promoting the learning of behaviors more sober and supportive”.

In this regard, he urged “a truly sustainable policy and economy for the quality of life, for the benefit of all the peoples of the earth and especially the most disadvantaged and at risk.”

He concluded by expressing his wishes for “literacy, which aims to lay the foundations of sustainable and peaceful societies.”
