Popular European Tourist Destination Bans Suitcases As A Measure To Reduce Noise Pollution

Croatia, known for its captivating beauty, is a highly sought-after destination in Europe, with the city of Dubrovnik drawing in many tourists annually. Its picturesque coastline, enchanting islands, delectable cuisine, and welcoming locals make it an appealing choice for visitors.

However, you might reconsider hauling a large wheelie suitcase if you plan to visit this popular location during the summer.

Tourists dragging their suitcases along Dubrovnik’s famous stone-paved and cobbled streets have raised concerns about noise pollution.

They express frustration that this activity disturbs their peace at night and affects their sleep.

In response to the noise pollution concerns raised by residents, Mayor Mato Frankovic has implemented new regulations in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

These rules entail a ban on tourists dragging wheeled suitcases along the winding roads of the historic area.

“Sounds like a great idea. Can we do the same at airports and stations? They are a menace,” one person wrote online about the new rule.

As part of a broader initiative to minimize the presence of suitcases in Dubrovnik, the local authorities have banned tourists from carrying any suitcase within the city.

Starting in November, a system will be established where travelers must deposit their bags outside the city limits. Dedicated couriers will then efficiently transport these bags to the guests’ accommodations.

According to Schengenvisainfo News, this measure is part of the “Respect the City” program introduced by the Dubrovnik Tourist Office.

Despite these regulations, Dubrovnik continues to remain a popular destination for tourists.

The Dubrovnik Times reports that the city has recorded 289,000 arrivals and 763,500 overnight stays since the beginning of the year, marking a significant increase of 32 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

In addition to the suitcase ban, tourists have been encouraged to demonstrate respect towards the city by refraining from walking pets without a leash, avoiding climbing monuments, and maintaining appropriate attire by wearing shirts while exploring the area.
