A Yale University professor is facing calls for her dismissal over her social media posts in which she appeared to justify the murder of Israeli civilians by Hamas terrorists and called Israel a “murderous, genocidal settler state.”
Zareena Grewal, a historical anthropologist and documentary filmmaker who works as an associate professor of American studies, ethnicity, race, migration, and religious studies, came under fire after speaking out in support of Palestinians as Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel unfolded.
“My heart is in my throat,” Grewal wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday. “Prayers for the Palestinians. “Israel is a murderous and genocidal settler state and Palestinians have every right to resist through armed struggle and solidarity.”
Grewal, who described herself as a “radical Muslim” in her X biography, followed with a series of tweets that appeared to applaud the bloody invasion, in which entire families were wiped out and babies beheaded, according to the Israeli military.

“It’s been an extraordinary day!” Grewal was effusive as he retweeted a news video covering the initial attack.
When journalist Rachel Shabi tweeted, “Civilians are civilians, they are civilians, no matter where,” the Yale educator responded, writing, “Settlers are not civilians. This is not difficult.”
Grewal doubled down in another tweet, arguing that “no government on earth is as genocidal as this colonial state,” referring to Israel.
A Yale professor is facing intense backlash on social media after she made several comments that appeared to downplay Hamas’ killing of Israeli civilians and paint the Jewish state as an oppressive regime.
On Tuesday, Yale student Netanel Cripse launched a Change.org petition titled “Remove Zareena Grewal from the Yale Faculty for Promoting LIES and VIOLENCE.”
“She has unequivocally demonstrated that she has no right to hold her current position or in the field of education if she considers war crimes against civilians to be acts of resistance,” Cripse wrote.
As of Thursday morning, more than 28,000 people had signed the petition calling for the professor’s immediate dismissal.

Grewal did not respond to the firestorm caused by his tweets and made his X account private on Wednesday night.
A Yale spokesperson, however, defended Grewal’s right to free speech.
“Yale is committed to free speech and the comments posted on Professor Grewal’s personal accounts represent her own views,” spokesperson Karen Peart told the Yale Daily News student newspaper.

In his first book, “Islam is a Foreign Country: American Muslims and the Global Crisis of Authority,” Grewal wrote about the transnational Muslim networks that link American mosques to Islamic movements in the Middle East.
Grewal has received awards for his writing and research grants from the Fulbright, Wenner-Gren, and Luce foundations. His op-eds have appeared in the Washington Post, the Huffington Post and Muslim Monthly.
