S Jaishankar on resumption of e-visa services for Canadians

India has again started issuing e-visas to Canadian citizens after a diplomatic row over Ottawa’s allegation that the Indian government may have been involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. When things began to improve, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described it as a “logical consequence”. At a press conference on Wednesday after concluding the Virtual G20 Leaders Summit, Jaishankar said: “First of all, the E visa had nothing to do with the G20 meeting.” “We temporarily stopped the issuance of visas due to the difficult circumstances faced by our diplomats in Canada, which made it impossible for them to visit the office and complete the formalities required for visa processing,” he said.

Jaishankar calls for peaceful resolution

According to BLS International, an Indian outsourcing services provider that manages government and diplomatic missions around the world, the Indian mission in Canada temporarily stopped providing visa services in September for operational reasons. This decision was made until further notice. Important announcement from Indian Mission: Indian visa services have been suspended until further notice due to operational issues, effective September 21, 2023. The BLS website said, “Please continue to check the website for updates.” After assessing the security situation and considering Canada’s previous actions, India decided in October to resume providing visa services to four different groups for travel to Canada. Categories include conference, business, medical and entry visas. As of October 26, services were offered again.

Canada praised India’s decision to partially restart visa services after hearing the news, describing it as a “positive indication” and stating that the suspension “should not have happened in the first place.” Notably, India suspended its visa services in September, citing an indefinite pause, during a diplomatic dispute with Canada. This action came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that “agents of the Indian government” were responsible for the June murder of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a member of the Khalistani movement.
