Rep. Goldman Claims He ‘Used the Wrong Word’ When Calling for Trump to be ‘Eliminated’

New York Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman apologized Monday and said he was wrong when he called for former President Donald Trump to be “removed,” which some on social media argued could incite violence against the Republican presidential front-runner. of 2024.

“Yesterday on TV I mistakenly used the wrong word to express how important it is to the United States that Donald Trump not be president again,” Goldman said in X post. “While he must be defeated, I certainly wish him no harm and do not condone political violence.”

“I apologize for the poor choice of words,” he added.

The New York lawmaker called for Trump, 77, to be “removed,” citing his “dangerous” rhetoric, during an interview with former White House press secretary Jen Psaki on MSNBC on Sunday.

“Your rhetoric is getting really dangerous,” Goldman told Psaki.

“Increasingly dangerous. We saw what happened on January 6, when she used his now inflammatory rhetoric, and her recent social post about the truth is incredibly, incredibly scary for anyone who might be trying to work in government. And it is simply unquestionable at this point that the man cannot hold public office again. Not only is he unfit, but he is destructive to our democracy and has to be removed,” the District 10 representative said.

Goldman apologized Monday for his “poor choice of words.”

The Trump campaign told The Post on Monday that Goldman’s comments were not surprising.

“Democrats have been calling for violence against President Trump and his supporters since 2016. This is not new or surprising rhetoric from nasty liberals,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

X conservatives were outraged by Goldman’s comments, with some arguing that the lawmaker was alluding to the former president’s assassination.

“If a Republican went on TV and said a Democratic presidential candidate needed to be ‘eliminated,’ the FBI would raid him within hours. “Donald Trump faces half a millennium in prison for saying people should ‘fight,’” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote on X. “Instead, Dan Goldman alludes to the assassination of Donald Trump and does so without consequences or fear of any consequences.”

“At a minimum, Goldman should be investigated by the Secret Service for this threat,” demanded Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch.

Several argued that Goldman deserved to be censured in the House for his comment.

“I hope President Johnson censures this crazy guy!!!” Trump-aligned Republican consultant Alex Bruesewitz posted on X.

Goldman, a former federal prosecutor, served as lead counsel for House Democrats during the first impeachment inquiry into Trump. He was elected to Congress in the 2022 midterm elections and represents parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan.
