House Republicans criticized President Biden for vacationing in the Caribbean as the country continues to battle an unprecedented border crisis, calling the Christmas excursion a “dereliction of duty.”
Biden landed on Wednesday in St. Croix, in the US Virgin Islands, where he is staying rent-free at the beachfront home of wealthy friends; A trip comes at a time when major US cities have been overrun by migrants crossing the southern border. In New York,
“President Biden’s entire presidency has been a vacation from reality: 760,000 illegal immigrants have been found at the border since October,” Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Alabama, thundered on Fox News in an article published Saturday.
That sentiment was also shared by Texas Republican Rep. Randy Weber.

“President Biden’s dereliction of duty is on full display as he sits on the beach and ignores the thousands of illegal immigrants invading our country daily,” Weber said. “America as we know it will be unrecognizable unless this administration comes to the table, starts enforcing the laws, and stops the flow of illegal immigrants.”
Rep. Mark Alford, another Texas Republican, added that “our borders are in ruins” and that the Biden administration “should be ashamed” of its performance on the issue.
In December there were more than 276,000 encounters with immigrants, the highest number recorded so far.

In New York City, Mayor Adams has called for drastic cuts to police, libraries and schools in an effort to reallocate more resources to immigrant services.
Biden will remain on the island until January 2. Last year, the president also stayed at Bill and Connie Neville’s luxurious three-bedroom home, and made headlines when one of his golf balls went off course and was recovered by an 8-year-old boy.
