Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told former President Donald Trump that she will leave office at the end of this month, shortly after the South Carolina primary.
Trump, 77, is expected to endorse North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley as McDaniel’s replacement after the Palmetto State primary on Feb. 24, sources told the Associated Press on Tuesday.
The former president and Republican primary front-runner suggested Monday that McDaniel, 50, should leave her post after the RNC reported a decade-low fundraising numbers entering the presidential election year.
“I think she knows it, I think she understands it,” Trump said during an interview on Newsmax when asked if McDaniel should resign after three consecutive election cycles of poor Republican performance.
Trump also joked in a Truth Social post that he will “make a decision the day after the South Carolina primary on my recommendations for growing the RNC,” calling McDaniel a “friend” and praising her work in Michigan during his presidency. 2016 election victory over Hillary Clinton.
Multiple outlets have reported that Trump met with McDaniel at his Mar-a-Lago estate on the day of publication.

Trump’s preference for Whatley to take the helm of the national party stems from the North Carolina Republican Party chairman’s belief that massive voter fraud was perpetrated during the 2020 election and the former president’s view that Whatley was instrumental to achieve North Carolina that same year, according to the New York Times.
Whatley also serves as general counsel to the RNC and has supported efforts to develop new election laws in response to fraud concerns.
RNC rules require that an election be held for a new leader if McDaniel were to resign.

According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, the RNC had just $8 million in cash on hand as of Dec. 31, the lowest level since it had just over $5 million in cash on hand in late 2014.
By contrast, the Trump campaign ended 2023 with $42 million in cash on hand.
“Nothing has changed. This will be decided after South Carolina,” Republican National Committee spokesman Keith Schipper said of McDaniel’s status in a statement to the Post.
The Trump campaign did not respond to the Post’s request for comment.
