DES MOINES, Iowa – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley held back when discussing former President Donald Trump’s character during their debate Wednesday night.
Both candidates highlighted their complaints about Trump’s behavior, but stopped short of an outright rebuke.
Debate moderators took note of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s farewell message, in which he criticized his rivals for not standing up to Trump and asked for their perspective on the former president’s character.
“I think the next president needs to have moral clarity,” Haley responded. “I think you need to have moral clarity to understand that when it comes to dictators in the world.”
“If you look at Donald Trump, I said I think he was the right president at the right time,” he added. “I agree with many of his policies, but his way is not mine. I have no revenge. I don’t have revenge. I don’t take things personally. For me, it’s very much about no drama.”
DeSantis emphasized Trump’s shortcomings on the political front during his tenure in the White House.
“I appreciated what President Trump did, but let’s be honest, he said he was going to build a wall and Mexico would pay for it. He didn’t deliver that. He said he was going to drain the swamp. He didn’t follow through on that,” DeSantis said.

“I debated with the governor of California, Gavin Newsom. You know, I thought he lied a lot. “Man, Nikki Haley can give you a run for her money,” he chided.
