Samsung has revealed plans to significantly boost artificial intelligence capabilities across its Galaxy smartphone lineup.
The company previewed a set of AI-powered features it calls “Galaxy AI” that will debut on devices in 2024, headlined by real-time phone call translation.
In a blog post, Samsung stated that it aims to “transform your everyday mobile experience” through AI, while maintaining its commitment to privacy and security. This underlines Samsung’s goal to make AI a central differentiator as smartphone innovation stagnates.
On-device AI-powered real-time call translation
The most intriguing capability previewed is called “AI Live Translate Call.” It will provide real-time audio and text translations during phone calls made through Samsung’s native calling app.
The key detail is that these translations will be done entirely on the device, without transmitting voice data to the cloud. This should alleviate privacy issues associated with processing conversations over Internet services.
Samsung says users will see translated conversation text appear in sync while listening to translated speech. This could greatly improve communication abilities across language barriers.
Galaxy AI to launch in 2024, likely with S24 smartphones
While short on details, Samsung indicated that its Galaxy AI improvements will arrive in early 2024. The timing strongly implies integration with the Galaxy S24 line of premium smartphones expected to be unveiled next year.
The Galaxy S series serves as a showcase for Samsung’s latest mobile technologies. Including AI capabilities, such as seamless call translation, would help S24 phones stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
Samsung’s Gauss AI will also arrive next year
Notably, Samsung this week demonstrated its proprietary AI system called Gauss that will power on-device experiences. Gauss is expected to be a pillar of the Galaxy AI platform that will roll out in 2024.
Like Apple and Google, Samsung has invested heavily in developing its own AI that can safely execute functions on smartphones without cloud connectivity. Gauss can enable capabilities that rival Google Assistant or Siri while safeguarding user privacy.
AI becomes key battleground for smartphones
As the core functionality of phones has largely stagnated, AI-powered features are emerging as a new field of differentiation. Samsung is now signaling its ambition to be a leader in AI.
Google’s Pixel phones already feature AI photo editing tools like Magic Eraser. The rumored Pixel 8 may bring more improvements. Apple is also dedicating huge resources to training AI models for integration into iPhones.
Even startups like Humane are entering the space with dedicated AI devices. Samsung clearly has no intention of ceding ground to these rivals in nascent AI capabilities.
Security and privacy remain paramount
However, Samsung emphasized that its AI advancements will meet its strict privacy standards. On-device processing prevents exposure of personal data.
This contrasts with some competitors that rely more on cloud connectivity, raising concerns about data exploitation. Samsung promises users that they will be able to enjoy the usefulness of AI without compromising security.
More details coming soon at Unpacked 2024
While the blog post laid out the vision for Galaxy AI, the details are still unclear. But Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked 2024 event, likely in February, should reveal all the details about the built-in AI features in the S24 line.
For now, Samsung is building anticipation by promising a new era of transformative AI experiences designed entirely with user trust in mind. If it can deliver on this promise, Samsung could emerge as a leader in artificial intelligence responsive to growing privacy demands.
