A Seattle man accused of causing a fatal crash that sent a bus careening toward a woman had more than 50 warrants for his arrest, according to court documents.
Adam Abelson, 31, was arrested Nov. 4 after his red sedan collided with another vehicle on Fifth Avenue at high speeds, causing his car to crash into a subway bus that left the road and crashed into an empty building.
Crashing into the building, the bus also struck 28-year-old Amanda Schneider, who died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries, KomoNews reports.
It has since been revealed that Abelson has a long record, including convictions for hit-and-run, prowling with a vehicle, making false statements to public servants, at least 10 robbery cases and more.
“Over the years, more than 50 arrest warrants have been issued for the defendant,” prosecutors said.

Before the fatal crash, Abelson was pending an “attempt to elude” case in July in which he allegedly sped away from an officer “through a red light in downtown Seattle,” according to court documents.
During the time of that incident, he had multiple warrants calling for his arrest for DUI, receiving stolen property, and escaping from community custody.
Despite his criminal career, the King County Prosecutor’s Office said the July incident was never sent to prosecutors for a decision on a felony charge, adding that prosecutors cannot make a felony case just by the first appearance document.
This meant Abelson was able to walk free despite having an active arrest warrant, with the additional warrant for attempting to elude police issued in August.

Seattle-based attorney Chris Davis, who represents two of the 14 people who were on the bus when it crashed, said his clients were demanding answers from the county about why Abelson might be away from home.
“Did the government not fulfill its responsibility to monitor this criminal?” he told the local media.
He added that his clients were injured in the accident after they were “thrown into the bus like rag dolls” during the impact.

Schneider’s father told King 5 that his family was heartbroken over the 28-year-old’s death, saying, “I will never recover from this loss. She was my only daughter. “I will miss her immensely.”
Abelson was charged with vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. He was also accused of having drug paraphernalia in the front seat of his car at the time of the accident.
Police are currently awaiting a state toxicology report to determine if Abelson was under the influence during the incident.
Abelson was booked into the King County Jail and his bond was set at $550,000.
