A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into a fatal accident on the A48. Three people were found dead in St Mellons on Monday March 6 after the car they were traveling in crashed at a roundabout on the A48. However, he has been out on bail according to pending investigations. Sophie Russon and Shane Loughin, 32, were rushed to hospital after the car was found shortly after midnight on Monday March 6, two days after the group was reported missing.

Police officers were present at the scene of the fatal accident in St Mellons. Police have claimed that the offenses for which the man has been arrested are unrelated to the fatal collision that occurred at 2:30am on Saturday March 4th and resulted in the death of driver Rafel Jeanne and passengers Darcy Ross and Eve Smith. His families have been informed of the arrest and continue to be supported by specially trained family liaison officers. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Davies of South Wales Police said the arrest was made as a result of evidence identified by investigating officers from the fatal collision and involves the same vehicle.
Last month, the Argus revealed that a sixth passenger, Joel Lia, was dropped off hours before the fatal crash. The group of six went to the seaside caravan park after drinking at a nightclub. Just after midnight on 6 March, the group’s car was found in trees near the A48 at St Mellons. Three of the occupants, Rafel Jeanne, Darcy Ross and Eve Smith, had reportedly been killed, and two others, Shane Loughlin and Sophie Russon, had been seriously injured. The day after the car was found, police watchdog IOPC announced it had decided to investigate the missing persons reports, which were lodged with Gwent Police and South Wales Police on 4 and March 5, respectively, and were handled by the two forces.
