It’s a dog crime novel.
A northern Italian province has resorted to elaborate DNA testing to find four-legged criminals whose owners fail to clean up after their furry friends defecate in beautiful Bolzano.
Dog parents are now required to send their pups for a DNA test as a tracking mechanism to easily identify the culprits behind their droppings.
“Bolzano receives a few hundred complaints from citizens every year about the poor management of public lands. More than half are for dogs,” the director of the veterinary department, Paolo Zambotto, told Reuters.
“Law enforcement was only able to catch three or four of them because they have to go there and set up some kind of surveillance.”

The fines, exempt for tourists and non-locals, range between 292 and 1,048 euros (between $318 and $1,143).
However, Bolzano officials have their tails between their legs as only a small fraction of the area’s 45,000 dogs (about 5,000, just 11%) have complied so far, The Guardian reported.
“It’s easier said than done,” Madeleine Rohrer, a local Green Party associate, told Italian newspaper Il Giornale.
“It will only be an additional expense for the municipality and for the police, who have many other things to do.”
But Nabe, near Austria, is not the only place where there are problems with dog poop.

In the United States, apartment complexes in Denver also instituted dog DNA testing for the same reason, as did a city in France.
A complex in Washington state also required testing (another in Maryland did as well) for all residents’ pets.
