Something you’ll love to wear: Y2K fashion that Gen Z still loves

Generation Z, those born between 1997 and the early 2010s, grew up with mobile phones in hand and quickly adapted to new technologies and trends. The selfie generation, the TikTok kids, or whatever you want to call them, are used to consuming entertainment, social media, fashion, and other things at the touch of a button.

With that sense of immediacy, young people celebrate and discard trends at breakneck speed, accelerating the cyclical nature of fashion. Y2K fashion is back, courtesy of Generation Z, just as Millennials helped usher in the ’90s nostalgia that has dominated fashion in recent years.

1. Shoulder bags

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker and Y2K Fashion: The girl flaunts that unusual “long, simple dress plus dressy shoes and casual bag” combination that was a big part of your life if you attended college in the 2000s.

Matching the bag enough with the shoes will make it look put together instead of chaotic. The “classic” shoulder bag appears everywhere, from Coach to Marc Jacobs. Instead of an exact reproduction of what we used to see, this time it’s a more fun homage and nod to the past.

2. Fisherman hats

Bucket hats have been popular for a while, but you can dress them up by sewing on patches or rhinestones (very ’00s!) or getting a yin-yang daisy variation.

3. Low-rise jeans

Eva Longoria wore low-rise jeans to ABC’s primetime previews, and her thin pink belt highlighted how low they were. Low-rise jeans used to be designed to show off your abs, but these days they’re a little more comfortable.

If your hips are smaller than your shoulders, look for a belt that fits well so they don’t fall down.

4. Oversized belt

During her performance on MTV’s TRL, Beyoncé hit the 2000s fashion trifecta: low-rise capris with a huge belt. Extra credit for wallet chain. In my opinion, you can’t get a better Y2K outfit.

You should match your belt to the shape of your jeans. I like a huge belt with my high waisted denim as it draws attention to my physique. However, since low rises are making a comeback, you can also choose a sleek option.

5. Juicy Couture Tracksuits

Britney Spears’ Juicy Couture tracksuit was more than just a trend; she defined the style of a decade. Her Frappuccino from Starbucks is the only thing missing. You can always go to Juicy and get a basic tracksuit or, if you want to look a little older, opt for a gorgeous, delicious cashmere.
