After coming under fire from rock and folk luminaries for giving voice to misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines, Spotify Technology SA will add a “content tip” to every podcast episode that involves a discussion of the vaccine, according to CEO Daniel Ek.
In a blog post published on Sunday, Ek said: “This new initiative to counter disinformation will roll out to countries around the world in the coming days.” “To the best of our knowledge, this content advisory from a major podcast platform is the first of its kind.”
According to a spokesperson for his Archewell foundation, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have also raised concerns with Spotify regarding misinformation about Covid-19 on their platform and are committed to continuing to work with the company.
Listeners will be directed to a Covid-19 portal, which will contain facts and information from healthcare and medical professionals, as well as links to trusted sources.
The move follows Neil Young and Joni Mitchell’s announcement that they will remove their music from Spotify in protest of the popular streaming service allowing the spread of false information about Covid-19 vaccines.
Young took issue with airing his song with Joe Rogan’s top-rated podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Rogan, a known vaccine skeptic, has sparked debate with his views on the pandemic, government requirements and vaccines to combat the coronavirus. A total of 270 scientists and medical professionals signed a letter to Spotify earlier this month demanding the company take action against Rogan, accusing him of spreading lies on the show.
Brene Brown, host of the Spotify-exclusive “Unlocking Us” and “Dare to Lead” podcasts, said in a tweet on Saturday that she “would not be posting any podcasts until further notice.”
Brown could not immediately be reached for comment. According to Ek’s tweet, Spotify is also setting platform standards for its authors.
He said: “We believe we have a key role to play in enabling creator expression while balancing it with the safety of our users.” “It’s critical to me in that work that we don’t take on the role of censoring content while at the same time ensuring the rules are in place and those who break them face repercussions.”
