More than a dozen far-left House Democrats on Monday called for an end to Israel’s nine-day war with a resolution that referred to the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack as “gun violence” and made no mention of it. to the held American hostages. in the Gaza Strip.
The “Ceasefire Now Resolution,” introduced by Reps. Cori Bush of Missouri, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Andre Carson of Indiana, Summer Lee of Pennsylvania and Delia Ramirez of Illinois, calls for the Biden administration to “immediately call for and facilitate the reduction of tensions. [sic] and a ceasefire to urgently end the current violence” and “rapidly send and facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.”
“I mourn every Palestinian, Israeli and American life lost to this violence, and my heart breaks for all those who will be forever traumatized by it,” Bush said in a statement.
“War and retaliatory violence achieve neither accountability nor justice; it only leads to more death and human suffering. “We cannot bomb our way to peace, equality and freedom.”

Supporters of the bill also include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamaal Bowman and Nydia Velázquez of New York; Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts; Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey; Chuy García and Jonathan Jackson of Illinois; and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
Israel’s supporters criticized the resolution, noting that it came as the Jewish state prepared to carry out a ground invasion to destroy Hamas after it killed more than 1,300 people, including at least 30 Americans.

“Why don’t they ask Hamas to release the hostages?” wrote user Dan Goldwasser.
“Calling for an end to violent action after a group of Jews have been murdered but before they can retaliate against those responsible is neither humane nor neutral,” another user wrote. “He’s pro-terrorist.”
“Where is at least the call to release the hostages?” asked user joel weingart. “Israel has a duty to protect its citizens from Nazis-Hamas.

Israel has attacked the Gaza Strip with near-continuous airstrikes for more than a week ahead of a possible ground invasion, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to “demolish Hamas.”
In addition to the 30 Americans confirmed dead, 13 are missing, according to the State Department.
The Biden administration has confirmed that Hamas hostages include American citizens, but has not given an exact number.

Many of the radicals who supported the resolution called on Israel to show restraint in the hours after the attack, earning a rebuke from the White House.
“I have seen some of those statements this weekend and we are going to continue to be very clear. We think they are wrong, we think they are disgusting and we think they are shameful,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on October 10.
“Our condemnation corresponds directly to the terrorists who have brutally murdered, raped and kidnapped hundreds, hundreds of Israelis. There can be no doubt about it. There are not two sides here. “There are not two sides.”

Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American elected to Congress, has also received criticism in the past for describing Israel as having an “apartheid system.”
Omar has been criticized by fellow Democrats for anti-Semitic statements, including the implication that supporters of the Jewish state were being paid.
President Biden and Democratic leadership, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), have openly supported Israel.
Schumer told The Post on Sunday that “if the Hamas threat is not eliminated, they will do it again,” adding that he wished supporters of Hamas and the Palestinian cause could hear from the hostages’ families.
“Everyone, each one of the senators was crying, the whole town was crying,” he recalled. “And I said, ‘I wish those who think Israel is wrong would just listen to these parents and the anguish they face through a brutal, brutal Hamas.’”
