In a shocking episode, the Bengaluru-based technician lost Rs 68 lakh when he tried to sell a second-hand bed on the well-known online marketplace OLX.
The victim, who goes by the name Aadish, inadvertently gave his one-time password (OTP) to scammers posing as potential customers, according to an in-depth report by The Times of India.
This resulted in a significant financial loss over the course of three days. The Bengaluru police have said that this tragedy is the biggest loss of this type of fraud.
A man posing as Rohit Sharma called Aadish after placing an OLX advertisement asking for Rs 15,000 to sell his old bed.
Sharma began talks with Aadish on December 6 and expressed interest in purchasing the bed.
Sharma then gave Aadish his word that he would use a digital payments app to transmit the money.
But a few seconds later, Sharma alerted Aadish to an issue that was preventing money from being transmitted.

Sharma promised to return the Rs 5 that Aadish had deposited in Sharma’s UPI ID. This promise was made through a sequence of dishonest actions.
After that, Sharma returned Aadish Rs 10. After that, the scammer convinced Aadish to send him Rs 5,000 and received Rs 10,000 in return.
Sharma convinced Aadish to deposit Rs 7,500 and promised to repay Rs 15,000 as part of the intricate scheme.
At this point, Sharma made up a story to say that he had accidentally transferred Rs 30,000 and forced Aadish to refund the funds by sharing the OTP and clicking on a website.
Trusting the sincere buyer, Aadish complied with Sharma’s instructions.
But when money started disappearing from his account, he had doubts.
Aadish eventually discovered that he had been deceived, even after Sharma assured him that the delays were due to technical problems.

Between December 6 and 8, when the scam was taking place, Aadish continued sending money to Sharma because he was so caught up in the lie.
“The following links he shared were in lakhs,” Aadish clarified in a statement to The Times of India, adding: “I urged him to return the money as soon as I realized that he was losing money through IMPS transfers from my account. ”
