Paneer is a beloved delicacy in desi homes, enjoyed when our mothers prepare large meals or when health-conscious gym-goers can’t get enough of its nutritional goodness.
While many households make their own paneer, local dairies provide a convenient source of curd by weight. However, a photo that recently surfaced on the Internet is making Desis cringe and worry about hygiene.

Who was seen sitting on raw paneer?
On microblogging site ‘X’, user @zhr_jafri shared a photo of a man in a lungi sitting on something atop mounds of thick, exposed paneer, with excess water dripping into a plate below.
“Never buy unbranded paneer after seeing this,” the user exclaimed.
It even sparked speculation whether similar incidents occur at local dairy stores, and the Internet began to speculate whether even well-known companies engage in such unhygienic and embarrassing activities.

“What if this paneer is packaged, labeled and sold?” “LoL,” said one user. Another commented: “People who wear Gucci shoes sit on the branded paneer.” “Yes, branded paneers wear branded lunges or Bermuda shorts during this process,” a third observed sarcastically.
Where was the image captured?
While the photograph suggests “Kanpur, UP”, the actual location of this incident is unknown, emphasizing the importance of exercising caution while purchasing such products from the market.
Meanwhile, the original poster continued to suspect that the manufacturers were following the same precautions, and even posted a video of a fairly sanitary paneer manufacturing process at Udaipur’s Paras Dairy.
When has it happened before?
This is not the first time that unhealthy production of paneer has come to light. In 2019, authorities seized over 2,000 kg of paneer prepared in unhygienic conditions at two dairies in Vasai, Konkan district of Maharashtra.
Samples of the curd were tested by the Thane Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to confirm its validity. This raid came a few days after a dairy in Vasai was found using sulfuric acid in the process of making paneer.
