The iconic and legendary Rolex GMT-Master II

Rolex marks exemplify the hard work and innovation that led to the company’s great success. Wilsdorf and Davis Ltd. was founded by German watchmaker Hans Wilhelm Wilsdorf and his English partner Alfred James Davis in 1905. Rolex became certified as a company in 1908. After several years selling pocket and purse watches, the company took an important step ahead with the launch of its first edition of wristwatches. In 1910, a Swiss watchmaker used the Aegler movement in the world’s first watch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Precision.

Widely associated with excellence and reliability, Rolex watches are designed for everyday wear and, depending on the model, are ideally suited for a wide range of sports and other activities. These watches are made to last and are distinguished by their distinct and timeless aesthetic. The GMT-Master II is an excellent watch for traveling the world.

Rolex GMT-Master II Features

The iconic Rolex GMT Master II first emerged in 1955 and with an original red and blue color scheme generally known as the “Pepsi” bezel due to its similarity to the soft drink manufacturing company logo. The Perpetual GMT-Master II model was initially designed for pilots, so it includes appropriate functions for them, such as the presence of a second time zone displayed in 24-hour format. By turning the bezel, you can also read the time in the third zone.

This is the first piece in the world with a red bezel made of extremely durable ceramic. To avoid problems, Rolex equipped its watch with an additional GMT hand and a two-color bezel that clearly shows whether it is day or night in that time zone. In addition to being very readable that way, the innovative color scheme with the bezel split into two halves, red and blue, looked interesting and was highly sought after. The best way to make a two-tone bezel back then was to include a section of clear Plexiglas that revealed the painted surfaces below.

The original iconic colors were difficult to replicate until recently. This was due to the manufacturing process of the ceramic pieces. Mineral pigments are added to the solution during the manufacturing of Cerachrom bezels to add colour. These minerals are used because they can withstand high temperatures, which is required to produce strong, compact end products.

The brand perfected a new approach that allowed it to create a two-color anodized aluminum bezel. Cermachrom inserts were first used by Rolex in their rotating bezels. The obvious benefits of ceramic as a material are its shiny appearance and, above all, its extraordinary resilience, as it does not corrode, is not affected by UV light and is virtually scratch resistant.

The watch is housed in a round Oyster case with a diameter of 40mm and a water resistance of 100 meters. The iconic flute motif appears on the solid screw-down caseback. Its screw-down crown is made with a triple waterproof system and is secured by a crown protector that is an integral part of the monobloc central section of the case. The watch has a three-link Oyster bracelet with a polished center section and two outer links with a satin finish. It is secured with a folding safety clasp, which is standard for the product line. Its case and bracelet, both with reference number 116719BLRO, are made of white gold.

Rolex’s proprietary 3186 automatic mechanical movements with 31 jewels and COSC chronometric certification are housed within the white gold case of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II watch. Additionally, there’s a stop-seconds function for precise adjustment, and the caliber’s functions conclude with an instantaneous date display executed through an aperture set at three o’clock. Caliber 3186 has a frequency of 4 Hz and a magnetism-resistant blue Parachrom hairspring, as well as a Breguet top coil and a massive balance with variable inertia. Its bidirectional winding allows it to store enough energy to power the watch for two days.

Since the birth of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, in 1926, all Rolex models have been known for their extreme reliability. In the new line, cases with hermetic seals were presented, ensuring resistance to shock, pressure, dust, water and any other disruptive element. In 1931, the exceptional case was complemented by the world’s first automatic movement. Such a mechanism featured splendid precision, higher than ever, thanks to the ingenious Perpetual rotor system. Since then, the models in the Oyster Perpetual line have become the label’s most popular products.

The Perpetual rotor was improved in 1935 with a new flywheel called the “Super Balance”. Two years later, the Swiss watchmaker launched its first chronograph with the Valjoux movement. During World War II, Oyster Perpetuals were a popular symbol of success and perfection among British Royal Air Force pilots.
