Rolex marks exemplify the hard work and innovation that led to the company’s great success. Wilsdorf and Davis Ltd. was founded by German watchmaker Hans Wilhelm Wilsdorf and his English partner Alfred James Davis in 1905. Rolex became certified as a company in 1908. The original iconic colors were difficult to replicate until recently. This was due to the manufacturing process of the ceramic pieces. Mineral pigments are added to the solution during the manufacturing of Cerachrom bezels to add colour. These minerals are used because they can withstand high temperatures, which is required to produce strong, compact end products.
The brand perfected a new approach that allowed it to create a two-color anodized aluminum bezel. Cermachrom inserts were first used by Rolex in their rotating bezels. The obvious benefits of ceramic as a material are its shiny appearance and, above all, its extraordinary resilience, as it does not corrode, is not affected by UV light and is virtually scratch resistant.
The watch is housed in a round Oyster case with a diameter of 40mm and a water resistance of 100 meters. The iconic flute motif appears on the solid screw-down caseback. Its screw-down crown is made with a triple waterproof system and is secured by a crown protector that is an integral part of the monobloc central section of the case. The watch has a three-link Oyster bracelet with a polished center section and two outer links with a satin finish. It is secured with a folding safety clasp, which is standard for the product line. Its case and bracelet, both with reference number 116719BLRO, are made of white gold.
Rolex’s proprietary 3186 automatic mechanical movements with 31 jewels and COSC chronometric certification are housed within the white gold case of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II watch. Additionally, there’s a stop-seconds function for precise adjustment, and the caliber’s functions conclude with an instantaneous date display executed through an aperture set at three o’clock. Caliber 3186 has a frequency of 4 Hz and a magnetism-resistant blue Parachrom hairspring, as well as a Breguet top coil and a massive balance with variable inertia. Its bidirectional winding allows it to store enough energy to power the watch for two days.
