Guardia del Rey breaks protocol for tourist with Down syndrome
If you are a frequent visitor to the internet, you may be aware that these guards often go viral for yelling at tourists who approach their horses or get in their way during a march. This kind of anti-social behavior has left the internet divided on the issue.
While some people endorse the guards and condemn other tourists for being invasive and disrespectful just for a selfie, others do not appreciate the guards and their stern attitude on duty.
However, on top of the many debates on the internet, there was a guard who received universal praise for his small gesture and for breaking his protocol. The guard who caught his eye recently was doing his usual duty, standing up straight and looking straight ahead. But he broke protocol and moved an inch from his position to receive a special visitor.
Mike Van Erp, a 50-year-old professional handler, had brought a man he worked for as a handler to Horse Guards’ Parade. A video that has gone viral shows Mike and a young man with Down syndrome standing respectfully outside a corridor at a safe distance from a guard.

Like other tourists, the two men also stood next to the guard to take a photo. However, the caretaker and the young man accompanying him check several times that they are not bothering the guard.
The couple kept their distance, trying not to disturb the guard, something other tourists should take note of. But the two tourists were surprised when the guard unexpectedly approached them so they could get a better picture of the moment.
Mike later relived the moment and said: “I am very grateful to the soldier. I am lucky to have good parents and I went to a Jesuit school that cared for me and taught me well, the same for the boy I am with. Tears in my eyes.”
