The most poisonous plant in the world, Gympie-Gympie, is already in the UK
Under normal circumstances, Gympie-Gympie is kept in special gardens, but one daring UK local decided to grow the plant in his own home. Experts strongly advise anyone intrigued to keep their horses in check and not grow the plant in the vicinity of their home.
After being recovered from the Briton’s home, the dangerous Gympie-Gympie plant was placed in a safe location called Alnwick Garden’s Poison Garden.
You can naturally find this plant thriving in the rainforests of Australia and Indonesia. It belongs to the nettle family called Urticaceae.
When people first encountered this plant in 1866, it was reported that a road surveyor’s horse was stung by it. Two hours after being bitten by the poisonous plant, the horse went crazy and unfortunately later died.
The plant has tiny needles on its leaves that attack like stings.
According to John Knox, who runs the tours at Poison Garden, the Gympie-Gympie plant has very small needles that are like hair. When these needles touch your skin, it feels like a burning sensation. The pain worsens over the next 20 to 30 minutes and can last for weeks or even months.
Even if you accidentally touch the plant for a moment, this can happen. John Knox describes the sensation as similar to being electrocuted and being set on fire at the same time. In addition to causing excruciating pain, the plant has also been known to induce suicidal thoughts in people. There has been at least one case where a person shot themselves after experiencing a great deal of pain from the Gympie-Gympie plant.
