This human robot Optimus costs less than a Tesla car

Optimus, Elon Musk’s humanoid robot specialized in performing “repetitive and boring” tasks for humans, is closer than ever and the world now has access to the first prototype of his new creation.

Musk presented his innovation on the sidelines of Tesla’s AI Day, precisely as he promised a few months ago when he announced that he would show off a working prototype of his new product. Not only that, but Tesla’s self-proclaimed Techno-King divulged key information such as the fact that it will sell for “probably less than $20,000” and will be released in three to five years.

During the presentation, two Optimus models were exhibited. The first is a disassembled prototype with no outer casing and all the wires visible that can be moved. His name is Bumble C, and he’s a “raw development robot,” according to Musk, who will eventually become what Optimus plans to be.

The second was a completely covered but non-operational model that required the assistance of Tesla personnel to move for its debut. Despite the criticism, Musk sees this as a positive step.

“The robot can achieve much more than what we have just demonstrated,” said the world’s richest man. “From delivering packages to working in the factory to becoming the best gardener.” Will it come to pass?

Optimus, the solution to boring and monotonous tasks

Optimus human robot that Elon Musk hopes will be able to perform “mundane” tasks like grocery shopping. It was first unveiled in August of last year during Tesla’s inaugural AI Day.

According to the billionaire, the humanoid robot, also known as the Tesla Bot, has immense potential and could outsell the vehicles it makes in a matter of time.

Musk hopes his creation will address labor shortage gaps, which could go a long way for many companies, especially since the entrepreneur thinks his robot wouldn’t be too expensive. Despite the Tesla CEO’s hopeful outlook, other experts believe that the introduction of robots into the workplace will put many people doing simple jobs in factories or warehouses out of work, as well as significantly reduce the workforce.

Optimus will be approximately 5 feet 8 inches (173 centimeters) tall, weigh around 57 kilograms, and have a payload capacity of up to 20 kg, according to the presentation made during the 2021 AI event.

The same artificial intelligence technologies that Tesla is creating for use in its electric cars will drive Optimus, which was designed by a team of mechanical, electrical, controls and software engineers.

“Essentially, physical labor will be an option in the future,” Musk said in the presentation. Tesla is arguably the largest robotics company in the world. Our cars are essentially semi-intelligent robots on wheels.”

While the announcement looks promising, Musk has a history of showing things that are just prototypes, essentially selling a concept before it even exists. In any case, his statements are critical for robotics fans, as the story has quickly spread around the world.

People interested and trained in creating Artificial Intelligence, on the other hand, claim that it is virtually impossible for a robot to complete all human tasks by the end of 2023, as Musk estimates.

Critics claim that even Boston Dynamics, an American robotics and engineering firm with nearly three decades of experience developing and building robots, could not have accomplished this.

For these people, to believe that Tesla, which has not yet completed the development of autonomous driving in its vehicles (and has been in the eye of the storm for years due to repeated accidents with its autopilot), will succeed is absurd.

In the same way, it is impossible not to mention Musk’s apparent determination to divert the conversation towards these types of topics, some less negative, such as the recent suspension of the purchase of Twitter due to the issue of bots, the elimination of the home office for Tesla employees, and the most recent announcement about a 10% reduction in the company’s staff. Is it possible that Optimus Prime is becoming a reality, or is he just a puff of smoke?
