Threads rolls out expanded keyword searching to all users globally

After a smaller initial launch in August, Threads has now launched its expanded keyword search capability to all users in all markets.

As expected, keyword searching in Threads shows all posts that mention those search terms, helping users discover relevant and topical content. The results also show posts with hashtags or topic tags related to the keywords.

According to Adam Mosseri, director of Instagram, the new Threads search works in all languages available in the application. More search functions are also being developed.

The Threads team has made slow progress in adding searches and tags due to concerns about amplifying spam-like behavior. They want to encourage thoughtful posts, not irrelevant tags that chase engagement. That’s why expanding the search required months of testing. There is no current affairs section; Another element, thread concerns, could enable negative behaviors. The goal is to apply lessons learned from past social media problems and avoid those pitfalls. For example, users can only add one topic tag per post at this time.

The expanded search aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for Threads as “a billion-person public chat app that’s a little more positive.” By being more deliberate in how formats like search and tagging are implemented, Threads hopes to facilitate rich discussion, not divisive arguments.

Update to the latest version of Threads to try out the new search feature.
