When India won its first World Cup trophy
India’s maiden cricket World Cup triumph remains incomparable among their other achievements, mainly due to the grueling nature of the victory and also because it marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Indian cricket.
At Lords on June 25, 1983, Kapil Dev’s team triumphed over the formidable West Indies team by 43 runs, securing the Prudential World Cup in a stunning upset that defied all expectations. Despite not being the favorites to win, India persisted, and Kapil Dev’s iconic 175 against Zimbabwe marked a pivotal moment, breaking records in its wake.
The Indian team beat Australia in their last league match, propelling them to the semi-finals, where they surprised the favored English team. Soon after, they achieved victory over the dominant West Indies in the championship match, marking the pinnacle of achievement in the history of Indian cricket.
When India was crowned number 1 in the test rankings
On December 6, 2009, India achieved the coveted top spot in the ICC Test Team Rankings, a system started in June 2003. Led by MS Dhoni, Team India secured the top position, maintaining it until 2011, when the English team displaced them. However, in 2016 they regained first place.
In 2023, India sits just behind New Zealand in second place with 3 out of 3 wins and is expected to take over soon.
When Sachin bowled the Australian bowlers in the 1996 World Cup match
On February 27, 1996, a momentous World Cup match between India and Australia took place in Mumbai. While India enjoyed home advantage, Australia had a team packed with international star players. All eyes were on India’s beloved champion, Sachin Tendulkar, who, at almost 23, had already established himself as one of the leading batsmen on the world cricket scene in the previous years.
Standing at the other end of the field, Sachin watched in dismay as his opening partner and the team’s number three batsman succumbed to successive balls. Under Mohammad Azharuddin, the man he would eventually replace as captain that year, Sachin set about the task of repairing the early setbacks.
Taking to heart the adage that attack is the best defence, Sachin unleashed a series of boundaries against McGrath, making the renowned fast bowler look more like a rookie player than the formidable force he was known for.
Although India lost that game, the people of Mumbai were treated to a display of their hero’s exceptional talents, while the world got a glimpse of what was yet to happen.
When India won the ICC T20 World Cup
South Africa hosted the inaugural T20I World Cup in 2007, with a total of 12 teams participating in the tournament. In this historic event, India emerged as the first-ever champions, marking a major milestone in the world of cricket.
Following India’s dramatic exit from the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup in the West Indies during the group stage, a group of young players were sent to the African continent.
India’s opening match against Scotland failed, leaving them with a crucial must-win match against arch-rivals Pakistan during the group stage. The game ended in a draw, leading to the first and only delivery in cricket history.

Both teams took turns trying to hit the stumps. India emerged victorious in bowling as Pakistan failed to hit even once. Once again in the final, India faced Pakistan in a tense, low-scoring match that culminated in a thrilling finish.
When Misbah-ul-Haq attempted to bowl a shovel over fine leg, the ball rose into the air, only to be caught by Sreesanth at short fine leg, sealing India’s victory.
When a new Indian team won the 2013 Champions Trophy
Following their victory in the 2011 World Cup, the Indian cricket team went through a transitional phase, particularly in white-ball cricket. Legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir gave way to players like Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, who took over as the new top three players.
The captain at the time, MS Dhoni, skillfully managed this transition, establishing a solid foundation for a team that would eventually dominate ODI cricket for years to come. During the 2013 Champions Trophy, new heroes emerged in the form of Rohit and Dhawan, while Ravindra Jadeja proved to be a reliable all-rounder.
The Indian team remained undefeated throughout the tournament, culminating in a victorious finish by beating hosts England in the final, adding the perfect finishing touch to the championship.
