The term “torrejas” is used generally to refer to various culinary preparations in different parts of the world. In a broad sense, torrejas are usually foods that involve submerging some type of ingredient in liquid before cooking it.
Torrejas are therefore culinary dishes that involve soaking an ingredient (usually pan, but not exclusively) in a liquid, such as milk or egg, before being cooked.

Torrejas recipe
Ingredients:
- Slices of bread (preferably day-old bread)
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle (optional)
- Butter for frying

Instructions:
- In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract (if using).
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter to grease it.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg and milk mixture, making sure to coat both sides evenly. Let the bread absorb the mixture a little.
- Place the bread slices in the hot skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the torrejas from the pan and place them on a plate. If you wish, sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the torrejas before serving.
- Repeat the process with the remaining bread slices, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
- Serve the torrejas hot and enjoy. You can accompany them with maple syrup, fresh fruits or whipped cream if you wish.
