UK tourists take legal action after falling ill during stay at 5-star hotel: ‘Absolutely horrible’

A group of about 15 travelers – including a couple who spent $5,000 on their getaway – have taken legal action against the tourism agency that organized their stay at a five-star hotel where they suffered serious gastric symptoms.

Three hotel guests even reportedly ended up in hospital during their stay at the Riu Palace Santa Maria Hotel in Cape Verde, off West Africa, after falling ill amid horrendous conditions at the posh venue. They are now part of a group taking legal action against travel company TUI which reportedly booked the trips.

One plaintiff, Lisa Bradly, 58, told SWNS that four days after her $1,637 vacation in September she began suffering from diarrhea and “felt like she couldn’t breathe.”

A local doctor told the woman from the United Kingdom that her blood pressure was critically low and that she needed to go to the hospital where she was treated with bottles of intravenous fluids, a heart pill and other remedies.

“It was absolutely horrible. “I felt like someone was squeezing my heart and I felt like I couldn’t breathe,” he told the UK media outlet.

Couple Lorraine Wilson and Mark Bonner, both 42, spent more than $5,000 at the hotel during one period in October only to suffer brutal diarrhea and stomach cramps, SWSN reported.

They were also reportedly advised to visit the hospital for treatment.

“The vacation quickly went from what we hoped would be a dream trip to a disaster,” Bonner told the outlet. “What’s even more worrying is that we didn’t seem to be alone.”

“We couldn’t even hold back the water and I’ve never been so sick in my life,” Wilson added.

The three hospitalized guests described a hotel plagued by poor hygiene, including “cats wandering around” and “flies everywhere.”

“I was surprised by the hygiene standards,” Bradly said.

Riu hotels declined to comment on the allegations, the BBC reported.

TUI did not respond when asked for comment, the outlet reported.

Jatinder Paul, an international injury lawyer who represents vacationers, said “action needs to be taken,” especially after 300 other people complained about the same hotel last year.

“Naturally our guests now want answers about how they got so sick on a five-star holiday,” he told SWNS.
