A week into the new school year, a shooting that rocked a campus and forced a three-hour shutdown Monday resulted in the death of a UNC-Chapel Hill staff member and the arrest of the perpetrator. University officials announced at a news conference Monday night that the faculty member’s name would not be released until the family had been notified. In addition, the suspect’s name was withheld and authorities claimed it was still too early to determine a potential motive. No other injuries were recorded. As they waited to get out and learn more about the Caudill Laboratories shooting at the heart of the public university, the students described a puzzling and disturbing afternoon.
While walking through the main campus courtyard shortly after 1 pm, Master’s student Jackie Ruiz received the first Alerta Carolina message. “To be honest, I feel quite terrified right now, but I feel safe where I am and I am grateful to my friends,” she said. She claimed to have fled to a neighboring building and to be hiding in a closet with other students. At 4:14 p.m., the university sent out an “all clear” notification. On Monday, the north entrance to Caudill Laboratories had a huge bullet hole to the right that had smashed through a window. On the first day of school, Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools were also closed for the afternoon until the go-ahead was given.
College classes were not held from Monday afternoon to Tuesday. According to UNC Police Chief Brian James, Caudill Laboratories will remain closed while evidence is collected and processed. At a press conference Monday, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said, “This loss is devastating, and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our university community.” Our hearts go out to the families of our fellow teachers, those who are personally connected to the victim, and those traumatized by this senseless act of violence. We will strive to restore that sense of trust and security within our community.
