While social media platforms provide students with many educational resources and information, serving as invaluable tools for learning and professional growth, they can also have detrimental effects. These include distractions, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate material, which can negatively affect students.
A high school student in Louisiana faced fallout after a video of her “twerking” at a post-homecoming party was shared on social media.
Her role as student government president was taken away from her and her chances of obtaining college scholarships were jeopardized.
As reported by The Guardian, Walker High School senior Kaylee Timonet was captured dancing at a private post-homecoming party on September 30 while a friend twerked nearby. This week, the school’s principal announced her removal from her leadership position and her support of scholarship applications.
“They basically told me I should be ashamed of myself.” Timonet told a local media outlet. “That I was basically not following God’s ideals, which made me cry even more.” “I felt like my life was over.”
The incident has sparked anger and arguments among students, and many have shown their support on social media with messages of “Let the girl dance.”

Some parents have drawn parallels between the school’s actions and the plot of the 1980s film Footloose.
According to The New York Post, after the meeting in which he allegedly reprimanded her, St Pierre also told the valedictorian that he was canceling her scholarship application. This scholarship is awarded to only two students each year.
“All I was doing was having innocent fun. I was mortified.” Timonet said.
Kaylee Timonet, is academically at the top of her class in @WalkerHighScho1She is student body president, but because she danced at the homecoming dance with a friend who was twerking, they punish her, tell her that she is not what God would want for her, and remove her from scholarship consideration. pic.twitter.com/RLRf4MMWWE

Rachel Timonet, Kaylee’s mother, met with the principal on Wednesday and was upset that she was not part of the initial meeting involving her minor daughter.
He strongly opposed what he considered an “unfair” punishment for his teenage daughter.
“They had other people who were on the dance team dancing in that video and nothing happened. He said she was punished because she’s the ‘hood ornament’ of the school.”
Has the director apologized?
According to the latest reports, Kaylee has been reinstated to the Student Government Association. She will also be supported by a scholarship and an apology from her principal.
Director Jason St. Pierre expressed his apologies and stated that he had already apologized to the Timonets.
He hopes that his upcoming meeting with Kaylee’s mother will resolve the situation and allow Kaylee to enjoy the rest of her senior year at Walker High School.
St. Pierre confirmed that he will reinstate Kaylee’s position in the Student Government Association and her support for the scholarship.
Additionally, he acknowledged that during his conversation with Kaylee about the dance party, the topic of religious beliefs came up.
He realized that it is not his responsibility to determine the religious beliefs of students or other people; that should be left to the discretion of the individual.
