US to ban TikTok and WeChat from app stores on Sunday

Popular Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat will be removed from the US App Store starting next Sunday. As a result, the TikTok and WeChat apps will not be available for download in the United States from that day on.

The United States has decided to shut down these two Chinese apps for security reasons. The US administration issued the directive on Friday, according to ABC News.

In a statement, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the Chinese Communist Party wanted to jeopardize the country’s national security, foreign policy and economy through the apps.

These two apps are widely used on both iOS and Android platforms. So the Trump administrations made the decision to ban the apps without any additional risk.

Although WeChat has been banned since Sunday, TikTok users will be able to use the app until November 12. Then it will also be completely banned.

The Commerce Department said the ban could be lifted if national security concerns were addressed before the TikTok app was shut down entirely.
