In search of solace and connections, she turned to an online artist forum, as revealed by the YouTube channel Catfished and reported by the New York Post.

“I’m incredibly excited to connect with fellow filmmakers with the same passion for filmmaking. I’m currently seeking creative collaboration opportunities, and I believe that together, we can create something truly remarkable,” she wrote on the forum.

Afterward, a message landed in her inbox from a user named “DK MH.”

This mysterious sender expressed interest in chatting and boldly asserted to be none other than the “well-known actor” Dacre Montgomery, renowned for his role as Billy Hargrove on the hit series “Stranger Things.”

“D K M H” is the title of Montgomery’s poetry book. “Me and him just really hit it off, but of course, I’m suspicious from the get-go until he starts doing things that make me believe that he is who he is,” McKayla said.

As per the New York Post, “Montgomery” consistently vented to McKayla about his relationship woes.

He recounted a tale of his girlfriend, Liv Pollock, maintaining a tight grip on his finances, leading to money problems. Consequently, McKayla found herself gradually sending him the funds.

“That’s one thing we bonded over, and, through the relationship, he was venting to me after a few months about his partner, saying she’s very controlling of him, he doesn’t get to do the things he wants to do, she’s always there, (she’s) always got to supervise.”

“I kind of empathized with that because my ex-husband was that way,” she added.

In an unexpected turn, “Montgomery” eventually proposed to McKayla, marking a year of their online interactions.

Remarkably, this relationship had transpired solely in the digital realm, devoid of face-to-face encounters. Furthermore, he urged McKayla to maintain the secrecy of their connection.

The investigation eventually unraveled the truth behind “Montgomery’s” façade, exposing him as a deceitful individual masquerading as a “Romance Scammer.”

This disturbing revelation shed light on a distressing modus operandi – manipulating emotions, exploiting vulnerabilities, and exploiting relationships for personal financial gain.

Reflecting on her harrowing experience, McKayla offered poignant insight, revealing the emotional mechanics that enable such scams.

For individuals like her, who fear abandonment and are driven by the desire to please, these scammers exploit these vulnerabilities, ruthlessly feeding off the emotional connection they establish.
