Violent gang members arrested in Cancun after they found bodies crushed with machete

Six members of a drug gang in the Mexican tourist destination of Cancun were arrested Monday for allegedly killing and dismembering five people with a machete and burying three others in a shallow grave, prosecutors said.

Quintana Roo police said six men were linked to the grizzly bear killings, which were first discovered on Jan. 29 when police found five mangled bodies inside a motorcycle taxi.

An investigation led officers to the group, who are members of a notorious criminal network that engages in drug sales, extortion, vehicle theft and homicides in the area.

The victims have not been identified.

After arresting the group, police confiscated their drugs, including marijuana, cocaine and crack, as well as two firearms exclusively used by the Mexican military.

Police also confiscated the motorcycle taxis used to transport the mutilated bodies, and one of the bicycles was reported stolen on January 11.

After tracing the stolen vehicle to the location where it was taken, police found three bodies that were dumped in a ditch and buried in a shallow grave.

The arrests came alongside a larger bust of a sprawling drug operation in Cancun, where another 23 people were arrested as part of a fake call center that preyed on tourists, delivered drugs and used motorcycle taxis and minors as lookouts.

Mexican authorities said the fake tourism agency did business through a call center where they offered sports equipment and tour packages to tourists in the popular resort city.

The suspects, however, would never deliver the goods and services and would simply keep the money.

The second floor of the call center housed their drug trafficking operation, police said, where they secured sales over the phone and delivered them on motorcycles.

Along with the large organization, the Quintana Roo police also arrested another suspect accused of buying and selling drugs on social networks, including home delivery.

Last year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning to tourists, asking them to exercise “increased situational awareness” in Mexico’s tourist cities amid rising violent crime and drug raids.

But tourists seem unfazed as Mexico’s tourism ministry revealed Monday that foreigners spent nearly $31 billion in the country last year, with about half spending their time in Cancun.

The spending figure has increased by 10% since 2022.
