Johannesburg Water updated the list of areas that will be affected by the Rand Water blackout. The interruption times will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and end at 5:00 a.m. on Friday. Johannesburg Water SOC Ltd (JW) is a municipal entity incorporated on November 21, 2000 and began operations on January 1, 2001 as an independent company, with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) as the sole shareholder. It supplies water and sanitation services to an area stretching from Orange Farm in the south of Johannesburg to Midrand in the north, Roodepoort in the west and Alexandra in the east. It operates in six regions with 10 network deposits and six wastewater treatment plants. Joburg’s water rates are among the cleanest, safest and healthiest in the world, and it is Johannesburg Water’s job to provide high-quality water and world-class sanitation to the city’s three million residents. There are 10,957.88 kilometers of distribution pipes that deliver water throughout the city, ensuring that the water provided remains first class.
Water cuts in Johannesburg
Areas will experience different times of very little or no water supply during the outage. On Tuesday night, Rand Water’s 58-hour water shutoff is scheduled to begin. Johannesburg residents not on the original list of affected areas should seek an updated version from Johannesburg Water, as it appears more suburbs than initially thought will be affected by the blackout. The planned outage will give the bulk water supplier 58 hours to install two valves between the A19 and B14 pipelines.
Johannesburg Water, which buys water from Rand Water for distribution in the city, has already updated the list of areas where it will be affected. During the outage, Johannesburg Water will try to make the water in its reservoirs last by reducing the water supply during downtime. These booster stations will be affected by the outage:
Dalesside Booster Station – Areas below the Dalesside Booster Station will have a 50 percent reduced water supply for 8 hours from 7pm on Tuesday. The water supply would be fully recovered by 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Other affected areas include Orange Farm, Lakeside, etc.
Zwartkopjes Booster Station: Areas under the Zwartkopjes Booster Station will have a 40 percent reduced water supply for 24 hours from 19:00 on Tuesday. The water supply should be fully restored by 19:00 next week on Monday. Eikenhof Booster Station: Areas below the Eikenhof Booster Station will have a 24 percent reduced water supply for 58 hours starting at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. The water supply would be fully recovered by 7:00 p.m. on July 24.
