Wé Ani, formerly known as Wé McDonald, is an American singer, songwriter and musician. She is best known for participating in reality singing shows such as The Voice 11 and American Idol 21. She finished as second runner-up on The Voice 11, receiving fewer votes than Billy Gilman and winner Sundance Head.
Who is We Ani?
At the age of four, Ani began singing and playing the piano, and then began acting at the age of six. Later, she enrolled at the Harlem School of the Arts when she was 12 years old. She became the youngest performer to win in the adult division of Apollo’s Amateur Night and appeared in first place twice and second place twice. Additionally, her album ‘Feeling Good’ ranked in the Top 100 of the iTunes Pop Chart upon its release.
Ani released four more singles after changing her stage name in July 2022. Prior to her appearance on ‘The Voice’, she had played at Carnegie Hall and was chosen to perform at the 50th anniversary of the Harlem School of the Arts.
The journey of the voice
Ani finished season 11 of The Voice in third place. She made her mark with an incredible four-chair audition of “Feeling Good” and her talent caught the attention of Team Alicia Keys. Throughout the season, she wowed audiences, but ultimately lost to runner-up Billy Gilman and winner Sundance Head.
He co-wrote the song ‘Head Up High’ with fellow contestant Kylie Rothfield during the competition. Additionally, she wrote a children’s book called ‘The Girl with a Big Voice’ to promote an anti-bullying campaign. This book tells the story of a young girl who was bullied at school but finally found public acceptance when she performed on stage.
Ani performed “Anyone” by Demi Lovato during the American Idol audition and it was so impressive that the judges gave them a ticket to Hollywood.
We, Ani, are originally from Harlem, New York and grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. She has one brother and four sisters. Her social media accounts are managed by her sister Imani T McDonald and Jasmine has appeared in talent shows with her.

American Idol is back and better than ever for its twenty-first season! This sixth season since the show’s revival is hosted by Ryan Seacrest, with judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. The audition process has changed drastically due to Covid-19; This season has seen the introduction of remote auditions which took place from August 3 to September 14, 2022.
