There is considerable disappointment following the passing of George Boal. Boal, one of Letterkenny’s royal characters, may be remembered as an important figure in Donegal enterprise for decades to come. George Boal, founder of Pinehill Industrial Estate in Letterkenny, was in his 80s. He was appointed Letterkenny Entrepreneur in 2004 and helped many people connect to their careers. He became a farmer’s son and spent most of his time at James Johnston and Sons.
Who is George Boal?
George Boal built his house and much of the Pinehill industrial estate on Mountain Top in Letterkenny with his fingers, very regularly with his wife Betty mixing the cement. After marrying in 1962, they lived in a caravan on a bare site in Mountain Top while George worked as a roofer. They built their residence, then sold the adjoining five acres for €45 and engaged in the Pre-Cast Concrete trading company. Now the region is in the middle of a bustling area with houses and a busy store and gas station. 40 years ago, when George was starting out, it became a bathroom in the center of nowhere. The vision of seeing what could be done became one that not many people shared, and many were skeptical, to say the least, especially when George became known as a difficult man to drink. However, in the early 1980s, with the help of Betty and her family, George became sober and remained steadfast until the end. By becoming involved in all elements of his existence, he became open and frank when he spoke about a part of his past. What he failed to communicate, as many people changed approximately to the extent that he helped others and one of George’s legacies is the fact that many people today are sober because of the help they received from him.
In 2004, George Boal was named Businessman of the Year by Letterkenny Chamber, an accolade that was well deserved and probably overdue. As he continually did, he recounted his debt to Betty, her support for so many years, and acknowledged, in the simplest way possible, the story of how Pinehill Industrial Estate came to be.
