The Manhattan Project was undoubtedly a top-secret project that was started to make the first atomic bombs during World War II. However, the Manhattan Project left profound impacts on history, as the ensuing nuclear arms race rapidly changed the world political order in ways that are still evident today. A large number of scientists were reportedly involved in the Manhattan Project. Thousands of scientists, including J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was a theoretical physicist, also participated in this project.
The scientists and their families were housed in secret military bases in different remote locations. The Manhattan Project directed two atomic bomb attacks on two cities in Japan, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. In August 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan that ended World War II but killed more than 100,000 people. President and founder of the Atomic Heritage Foundation, which is a non-profit dedicated to the history of the project and the atomic age, Cynthia Kelly said: “The Manhattan Project harnessed the enormous energy in the nucleus of the atom for the first time.”
Cynthia Kelly further added that its consequence was the creation of terrifying opposing arsenals of nuclear weapons, but ended in innovations from medicine to space explorations to civilian nuclear power engineering. In June 1942, the US Army Corps of Engineers created the Manhattan Engineer District to hide the development of the atomic bomb during the world war, this program was called the Manhattan Project. Historian Alex Wellerstein said that Nazi Germany could build the atomic bomb, so the United States should do it first.
