WhatsApp latest version proxy support feature is officially available for users

WhatsApp, a messaging app created by Meta Platforms Inc., announced Thursday that users can now use proxy servers to access the service in countries where the app is blocked.

A proxy server acts as an intermediary between users and web services. It also acts as a web filter, allowing people to bypass restrictions and censorship.

WhatsApp said that users of the latest version of the app can now use proxies with the app.

People in Iran and Syria have used virtual private network (VPN) services to get around Internet censorship.

The messaging service said: “If these closures continue, we hope this solution will help people communicate securely and reliably wherever they need to.”

In September, the messaging service said it would “do anything” technically possible to keep the service available and that it did not block Iranian phone numbers.

Iran blocked Meta’s Instagram and WhatsApp after protests broke out over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old who was killed after being arrested by the morality police in Tehran for wearing “inappropriate clothing.”
