Australian citizen and pro-democracy activist Chau Van Kham has reportedly been released from a Vietnamese jail. It was learned that he was arrested in Vietnam in 2019 and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Since his arrest, his family and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and human rights organizations have been advocating for his release. Kham is a 73-year-old former baker from Sydney who was visiting Vietnam in January 2019 when he was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City on terrorism charges.
He was a member of the Viet Tan, which is a US-based group that aims to establish liberal democracy in Vietnam through peaceful and political means. However, Vietnam is considered the Viet Tan a terrorist organization. In addition, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges that he had raised money for anti-state activities, joined anti-Vietnam protests in Australia, and recruited members for Viet Tan. Vietnamese police reportedly claimed that he had entered into Vietnam via Cambodia using a fake ID. A human rights group, Amnesty International Australia, described Kham as a prisoner of conscience and said he was detained for breaking his peaceful political beliefs. Kham’s wife and two children thanked the government for securing his release. In addition, they also thanked his legal team and many organizations involved. Rose Kulak, an activist with Amnesty International, said it was a momentous day. Supporters of Australia International who were shocked by Mr. Chau’s imprisonment have worked together to support Mr. Chau and his family in assisting in his release. Among those still in prison were journalist Pham Doan Trang and environmental activists Mai Phan Loi, Dang Dinh Bach and Hoang Thi Minh Hong.
