Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure and Human Settlements Lebogang Maile ordered the Gauteng Partnership Fund (GPF) Board of Directors to carry out an immediate investigation into whether GPF has offered several loans spanning more than a decade to Nonkwelo Investments. On Wednesday morning, it was reported that Vice President Paul Mashatile lives in the R37 million house registered on a 99-year lease for inherited properties. Legacy’s directors are his son-in-law Nceba Nonkwelo and Mashatile’s son Thabiso, according to company records.

Between 2013 and 2017, Nonkwelo Investments received at least four GPF loans totaling almost R30 million, coinciding with Mashatile’s second term as MEC of human settlements. The loans were to develop a property in Highlands, Johannesburg, for student accommodation to be called Hunter Heights, Construction. However, it has not yet been completed. One of Mashatile’s biggest benefactors is Edwin Sodi, the politically connected businessman currently on trial on charges of fraud and corruption linked to a R255 million Free State asbestos eradication tender, along with former Free State Prime Minister, Ace Magashule, who was recently ousted from the ANC.
