On Tuesday June 13, 2023, Zanda Moyo made her appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court. This brings to nine the total charged with aiding in the jailbreak of murderer and rapist Thabo Bester. On June 20, he will appear in court for the criminal trial. Moyo is charged with fraud, body snatching, and harboring and concealing an escaped criminal. On May 3, 2022, Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Center. Police suspect that the charred body of Katlego Bereng, which he left behind after faking his death in a fire in his cell, is that of the man.
Who is Zanda Moyo?
The state claimed Nandipha Magudumana, Bester’s girlfriend, stole three remains from Bloemfontein morgues, one of which was used in the escape, during bail hearings for five of the defendants last month. The state said that when Magudumana claimed her second body, she informed morgue staff that it belonged to the brother of her friend Zanda Moyo. Police later discovered that the man’s coffin was filled with cornmeal after a fake funeral was staged for him.
GroundUp also found evidence that Bester used Airbnb to reserve a luxury home in Ballito for Nandipha Magudumana and three others to stay between April 19 and 30, 2022. The total cost of the reservation was R90 800. BZ Moyo and Zanele Moyo were among the visitors granted security entry to the home. They gave the landlord copies of their Zimbabwean identification documents. Moyo declared in court that he had no representation and requested permission to contact his family. His request was granted and Judge Mohlolo Khabisi ordered him to make free use of LegalAid services. On June 20, 2023, Zanda Moyo will join eight other defendants in the criminal proceedings against Thabo Bester.
In the lawsuit against Bester’s girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana, her father, Zolile Sekeleni, and five people who worked at the Mangaung Correctional Center, he was legally added as a plaintiff. The trio are accused of being part of Bester’s daring escape in May last year. Asked by magistrate Motlholo Khabisi if he would hire a lawyer on his behalf or use legal aid, Moyo said he still needed to speak to his family. His case has continued until June 20.
