Wisconsin woman convicted of fatally poisoning friend with eye drops and stealing $300,000

A Wisconsin woman was convicted of fatally poisoning her old friend with eye drops and then faking her death to make it look like a suicide while stealing nearly $300,000 from the dead woman.

Jessy Kurczewski, 39, confessed to throwing six bottles of Visine into a water bottle she later gave to Lynn Hernán in 2018, alleging that Hernán was suicidal and requested the contaminated water.

But a Waukesha grand jury on Tuesday did not believe Kurczewski’s account and found her guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of robbery in connection with her death.

Hernan was found dead with crushed medication in her chest in her Pewaukee condo on Oct. 3, 2018. Kurczewski called 911 and said her family friend was not breathing and believed she may have been suicidal.

Although the scene appeared to be a suicide by overdose, the Waukesha County medical examiner discovered tetrahydrozoline, the main ingredient in Visine, in his system and declared his death a homicide.

Jessy Kurczewski, a Wisconsin woman, was convicted of fatally poisoning Lynn Hernan with eye drops and stealing $300,000 from her.

While Kurczewski appeared to be a loving friend and reportedly checked on Hernán on a daily basis, she was actually opening credit cards in the dead woman’s name and emptying her bank account.

“She didn’t spend the day worrying about Lynn. “She was opening a JC Penney account in Lynn’s name and was using Lynn’s other accounts to go shopping, make some online purchases, while she knew that she had just given poison to Lynn,” the Waukesha County deputy said. . District Attorney Randy Sitzberger said, according to WISN 12 News.

“Lynn Hernán became worth more dead than alive to Jessy Kurczewski,” he added.

Jessy Kurczewski gave Lynn Hernan six bottles of Visine in a water bottle in 2018.

Kurczewski was arrested almost a year after Hernán’s death when investigators discovered she had stolen $290,000 from him.

She maxed out her own credit cards and suspiciously received several large checks, including one for more than $130,000, from Hernan before the murder, prosecutors said, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

“Lynn gave Jessy money all the time because she wanted to,” her defense attorney Donna Kuchler said, according to the outlet. “Giving Jessy money made her happy. Jessy was like her daughter.”

Investigators also discovered that Kurczewski had searched for “household poisons” based on a deleted search history on his phone, according to WISN.

Kurczewski sobbed as the jury’s decision was read aloud in court Tuesday afternoon, video from the courtroom shows.

She faces a mandatory life sentence on the murder charge and will be sentenced on December 7.

Prosecutors said she killed the woman she claimed to have a mother-daughter relationship with for money.

“The defendant betrayed Lynn out of greed,” Deputy Prosecutor Abbey Nickolie said after the verdict.
