Woman dressed as a nurse seen stealing newborn from hospital and hiding it in backpack

A woman disguised as a nurse was caught on camera allegedly kidnapping a newborn from an El Salvador hospital, before brazenly hiding the baby in a backpack and fleeing.

Heartbreaking surveillance footage captured the alleged imposter nurse holding the baby in her arms as she walked through the maternity unit of the San Juan de Dios hospital in San Miguel last Saturday.

The woman, who was wearing a medical gown, had allegedly told the baby’s mother that she was taking him for vaccinations.

Once he reached the hallway, the alleged offender could be seen putting the swaddled baby in his backpack, hanging it over his shoulder, and then calmly walking toward the hospital exit.

Police said the baby was found safe about two hours later after a widespread search.

“He is being treated by specialist doctors to rule out injuries,” the National Civil Police of El Salvador said in a statement at the time.

A man and woman posing as the baby’s parents were arrested, police said.
