Sophie Small didn’t realize she had actually conceived twice in one month, even after giving birth to daughters she thought were twin sisters. The 30-year-old gave birth to Holly and Darcy in August 2020. The mother initially believed that the two girls who were born on the same day were twins, just like any other mother who gives birth to two babies at once.
However, after she gave birth to her two young daughters, the midwives were terribly alarmed by the difference in size between the babies. While Darcy tipped the scales at 4 pounds 2 ounces, Holly, who came in second in this world, weighed much more than Darcy at 6 pounds 1 ounce.
Doctors later concluded, after reflecting on what could have happened to the two children to make them so different in size, that the babies were conceived a month apart due to superfetation. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Superfetation is so rare in humans that there are only about 10 confirmed cases. They are so unique that when they do occur, they often make headlines,” the clinic’s information page states. “The possibility of you being affected by superfetation is almost zero.”
The clinic further states that a pregnant woman’s body undergoes “hormonal changes that make it nearly impossible to get pregnant while a fertilized egg (embryo) is already growing inside the uterus.
Sophie, one of the only women to have experienced such a phenomenon, told the Kennedy News that her pregnancy was “horrible.” Her mother shared: “She had two babies who were growing at different stages, but we didn’t know. They couldn’t understand why she was so sick. She was having twins, but one was bigger than the other.” “
He explained: “They had their own sacs and placentas, so they could feed whenever they wanted.” He added: “But [doctors] I couldn’t figure out why one twin was bigger than the other.”
It was only after the girls were born that the significance of their size difference led doctors to run tests and conclude that it was superfetation.
