World Oceans Day 2023 is celebrated on June 8 each year around the world to raise awareness of the importance of ocean conservation. The oceans are the deepest forms of water bodies in the world and a vital resource of the Earth. The main goal of World Oceans Day is to prevent the depletion of ocean resources and to make the public understand the role of the oceans in the environment.
About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and bodies of water. The oceans contain about 96.5% of the water present on Earth. The oceans are a habitat for various species and the only place for survival. On the special occasion of World Ocean Day 2023, here is a list of the five deepest oceans in the world.
1. Mariana Trench

It is an oceanic trench that is located in the Western Pacific Ocean and is known as the deepest oceanic trench in the world. It measures about 2,550 km long and 69 km wide. To understand the depth of the Mariana Trench, if Mount Everest were placed in the trench at this point, its peak would still be under water for more than 2 kilometers. The Mariana Trench was established in 2009 by the US National Monument and microbial lives thrive within this deeper trench.

2. Tonga Trench

Constituting the northern half of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction system, the Tonga Trench is the deepest trench in the South Pacific Ocean and the second deepest after the Mariana Trench. It has an average depth of 20,000 feet and a width of about 50 miles, reaching a maximum depth of 35,702 feet.
3. Philippine Trench

It is the underwater trench in the eastern Philippines. It is located in the Philippine Sea of the western North Pacific Ocean and continues NNW-SSE. The other popular names for the Philippine Trench are Philippine Deep, Mindanao Trench, or Mindanao Deep. This trench was formed due to a collision between the Eurasian plate and the smaller Philippine plate.

4. Kuril-Kamchatka Trench

The Kuril Trench is located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean and has a maximum depth of 9,600 m, making it one of the deepest in the world. This trench has been one of the main causes of various volcanic activities on the ocean floor of the region.
5. Kermadec Trench
The linear oceanic trench, the Kermadec Trench, is located in the South Pacific Ocean and extends about 1,000 km from the Louisville Seamount Chain in the north to the Hikurangi Plateau in the south, northeast of North Island New Zealand. This trench is a place where subduction takes place, a process in which the Pacific plate bends and cracks as it sinks under the Australian plate.
