"Young people should work 70 hours a week": Narayana Murthy’s statements provoke mixed reactions

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy believes that young people should work 70 hours a week so that India can compete with rapidly developing economies. He shared his thoughts on a podcast called ‘The Record’ by 3One4 Capital. In this podcast, he talked about nation building, technology, Infosys and his views on today’s youth.

During a conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, Narayana Murthy stated that India’s labor productivity is relatively low compared to other countries.

To compete with nations like China, Murthy suggested that Indian youth work overtime, similar to what Japan and Germany did after World War II.

He also pointed out other issues, such as government corruption and bureaucratic delays, and mentioned:

“India’s labor productivity is one of the lowest in the world. Unless we improve our labor productivity, unless we reduce corruption in government at some level, because we have been reading I don’t know the truth about this, unless we reduce the delays in our bureaucracy in making this decision, we will not be able to compete with those countries that have made enormous progress.”

Murthy, 77, addressed his appeal to the youth of today. “Therefore, I request that our young people say: ‘This is my country. I would like to work 70 hours a week.’” “You know, this is exactly what the Germans and Japanese did after World War II…they made sure that every German worked overtime for a certain number of years.”

The billionaire founder of Infosys emphasized that since youth constitute the majority of India’s population, they play a crucial role in the country’s advancement.

He noted that India’s culture needs to change towards discipline, hard work and determination because without this change, the government’s efforts alone will not be enough.

“We need to be disciplined and improve our work productivity. I think unless we do that, what can a poor government do? And each government is only as good as the culture of the people. And our culture has to change to that of highly determined, extremely disciplined and extremely hard-working people.” said Narayana Murthy.

He added, “And that transformation has to reach young people because young people make up a significant majority of our population right now, and they are the ones who can build our country.”

If you work 70 hours a week in IT, you are inefficient. You are part of an assembly line that produces robots.

These people have benefited a lot from Indian tech workers. He now believes most of them are technicians. But the workforce cannot be expanded that way.

If you are a billionaire, you don’t have to talk nonsense. What good is money if you can’t enjoy it? 40 hours a week is good, if you add the travel time of 15-20 hours a week, people are already spending 55-60 hours.

In 2020, Murthy also suggested that professionals should work extended hours. He recommended that Indians put in 60 hours a week for the next two to three years to help revive the economy after the pandemic.
