Samdish reported that while eating the fruit seeds, he could smell and taste nail polish. He posted an image of the box to his official Instagram account, along with a caption that said as soon as he tasted it, he could smell something familiar, more like ‘nail polish.’
“Ordered this packet of pomegranate (anaar) today from Swiggy Instamart. I don’t say it lightly. As soon as I took a spoonful and put it in my mouth, I could smell and taste something familiar. It was… wait for it… N..a..il polish. Yes, God Swear. No crosses,” he wrote in the caption.
Since its publication, the message has gone viral and garnered a lot of attention on social media. Samdish further stated that despite spitting it all out, he had a “burnt tongue.”
The commenter mentioned that pomegranate seeds that begin to spoil emit a scent and taste resembling nail polish remover due to yeast consuming the sugar. The user expressed skepticism about the addition of nail polish for coloring as it would not be a cost-effective method for coloring a significant quantity of pomegranates.
Another commenter explained that the nail polish scent is likely a result of yeasts breaking down sugars from the fruit and suggested that the pomegranate might not have been freshly seeded.
Swiggy addressed the issue
Swiggy Instamart addressed the issue to Moneycontrol, saying, “With regard to the specific complaint, we would like to clarify that our pomegranate called by Samdish with fragrant nail polish is actually containing authentic pomegranate arils only.”
The company also stated that they do not alter the “truly pleasurable and natural scent in all of our products, including pomegranate.”
The edible seeds or juicy sacs found inside a pomegranate fruit are known as arils. Each pomegranate has several arils that are protected by a strong outer covering.
The arils are ruby-red in colour and have a sweet-tart flavour. They are the most commonly consumed and relished component of the pomegranate due to their exquisite taste and nutritional benefits.
