Zandile Gumede Corruption Trial Update
After a couple of delays, the Zandile Gemede corruption trial is now underway and the presiding judge has issued a warning to legal representatives on the matter, suggesting that they should go ahead with the case and not withdraw for non-payment. . Gumede is a former Thekwini mayor who is facing trial along with 21 others for extortion, corruption, fraud and money laundering. However, it was learned that the case is being heard in the Durban High Court. Also, Sharmaine Balton is handling the case in March and after a couple of hearings, an adjournment was made. However, she does not have any of the withdrawals and will continue on the case. During Monday’s session she warned that she was not going to grant the deputies a withdrawal easily. According to reports, a total of 122 witnesses will be testifying in the case. Only two of them have reportedly testified so far and both are still under questioning.
