700 disabled people play Garba

As the nation celebrates Navratri, the festival of Adishakti, with characteristic fervor and faith, the Divyang Navratri Mahotsav in Ahmedabad has hosted Garba Fest to inspire people with disabilities. The occasion has been an annual tradition for the past six years. In this ceremony, nearly 700 disabled people, including old and young, performed Garba in honor of Aadyashakti Amba. “I was playing against Garba along with my friends on the playing surface about a decade ago when I saw a disabled person at the venue,” Divyang Garba Mahotsav organizer Vipulbhai told ANI. His presence inspired me and I decided to organize a Garba for the disabled on the same day. It’s been six years and counting. Today, nearly seven hundred disabled people from and around Gujarat came to play Garba.”

“It is a great initiative. We have been coming to Garba, which Vipul Bhai has hosted for the past six years, to take part in the festivities and the atmosphere. So don’t feel left out of this. Every year we look forward to Garba and have made many new friends. Many believe that we cannot play Garba because we are confined to wheelchairs. But the event organizer doesn’t see it that way. He runs the event as if he were one of us. We get to wear traditional Navratri attire due to the event. We meet people and wear traditional clothes,” a participant told ANI.

Devotees worship the nine incarnations of Maa Durga during the nine-day celebration of Navratri to receive her blessings. Each day of Navratri is associated with a manifestation of the goddess. During these nine days, people observe ritual fasts, chant shlokas dedicated to each goddess, wear new clothes, make Bhog offerings and clean their homes. They beg the goddess for her blessing so that they can lead a prosperous, joyful and satisfying life. Devotees fast and offer prayers to Goddess Durga for the next nine days.
